Introduction, handouts, discussion of pre-writing considerations and techniques. All students need to create a google account id and start a blog. The naming of the blog must be: en191f12s28+firstname+firstinitialoflastname and please consider using a picture of yourself. When asked, come forward to link your blog to this class blog. Please use the "simple design" option, just like this page when you set up your blog. The template is readily available when you create the blog.

Homework for next week:
"Who am I" - What did people write who were asked this question? Write a short report and post it later today on your blog
Story-in-a-Box: Make an inventory list of 13 items. Name the item and describe it. Two to three sentences per item. Then create a story linking the items in a plot that you fabricate. 350-700 words. The Story-in-a-Box is due next Tuesday at noon. (Due means: posted on your blog by 12:00 noon)

Phases of an interview

Elements of each interview that must show up on your blog:

1. Preparations.
Describe the preparations.
How did you approach people?
When, where, and how did you conduct and record the interview?
Whom did you interview?

2. Interview report. Describe the interview. What did surprise you?

3. Country Report. Report on country/region and culture.

4. Transcription. Transcribe the interview as you hear the questions and answers on tape. Then edit the entire interview to make it readable.

At least two interviews need to be transcribed. That allows for one report without the transcription (that interview is then limited to a grade of "B" - if you want an "A", do three). Still, we need to know the preparations, approach, interview process, etc. of that interview without transcription (1-3 above). Please be sure to choose interviewees from one country or region.

Due dates. When work is assigned to be posted, be sure to post it by noon of the day we meet. There is no make-up or "other work" you can do. Please be punctual or your assignment will not count toward your grade. (15 assigments means: 4% reduction of the final grade. Three of those are more than a letter grade!!)

General considerations: Please be sure to
...always write a thematic statement before you start on a writing project. (This paper is about...)
...always cross-reference information or web-data. Have at least three different sources for whatever you want to use.
...always cite your sources. You find it on the web, you cite it. Citations from the web are easy: url plus date visited

If you use text verbatim, put it in quotes and cite the source. Paraphrasing does not allow using source text unchanged. It means you report on what you read. You need to cite what/whom you are paraphrasing, of course.
